A board member’s role at most organizations are the typical expectations anyone would expect: to provide oversight for the organization; hold the executive director accountable, ensure the organization is meeting ALL legal expectations; attend board meetings to help develop strategies and budget for the organization; and help the organization meet its budgeting goals and mission. At YesLiberia, we believe that is not enough. Almost anyone can do that without truly being engaged and relating to the needs of the students and families we support. We believe board members should be capable of imagining the stories of our founder and the students we serve by reflecting on challenging times in their own lives or to the lives of someone in their families or immediate circle of friends.  That capability creates the consistent motivation necessary to 1) Become a natural advocate for YesLiberia, 2) Understand that each of us can create the impact we all want to see, 3) become impatient to leave a positive mark on the board during their term at YesLiberia, and 4) be the example we want to see from our supporters and volunteers.  That’s why Jallah usually asks new board members to think about how they would want to be remembered because we’re not here to feel a little better for serving when life temporarily reminds us how privileged or blessed we are to be able to provide for our own children and families. So, when you join our board, be ready to use your existing skills, resources, and network to make an immediate difference without any bureaucratic process and feel super proud of your impact. Don’t come to serve on our board, come to make one small history for at least one child or family in Liberia because of your efforts. That’s why we empowered our board members in various ways because we expect each board member to do the following:
